The snow has thawed and we’ve started warming up in the Capital Region, only to immediately have another snowstorm on the way! What would spring in the area be without 2nd Winter and Fool’s Spring? While we adjust, and get our gardening gloves ready, we hope you’ll join us for an exciting Pride Weekend kickoff in early May, at any of the events we’re putting together (read more below), or at one of our regular weekly or monthly groups across the region.

It’s also “Session season” here in Albany; our Pride Center is the closest LGBTQ+ community organization to the Capitol and Legislative Office Building in New York State. We encourage you to read below about the issues a local family faces in getting relief for their student, despite clear legal protections for LGBTQ+ kids against discrimination in New York State.

Consider running for a school board seat in your district, organizing a voter registration drive, or donating monthly to the Pride Center as a means of reminding our New York State elected officials that schools of New York must remain safe and supportive of LGBTQ+ youth and families. It doesn’t matter if you’re in downtown Albany or rural Rensselaer: we are not in Alabama; we are not in Florida; we are proudly here in New York.

Recognizing the immense value of year-round engagement, we are thrilled to share updates and insights into our expanding roster of events, including the TRANSition Expo, Pride 5K combined with a delightful Pride Pawrade, and our strategic initiatives to ensure inclusivity and support for every member of our community.

TRANSITION EXPO: A BEACON OF SUPPORT AND INFORMATION

The TRANSition Expo has rapidly become a cornerstone event for transgender individuals exploring medical transition. Our inaugural Expo, held at the Blake Annex in April 2023, welcomed 30-40 attendees and featured 20 vendors/speakers covering essential topics such as diagnosis, insurance, legalities, and financing transition. Building on this success, we aim to broaden our reach for the 2024 Expo, being held on May 4th, where we hope to double our impact, serving 75-100 participants with vital information and support, and fostering connections with local organizations like Fidelis Care, CDPHP, KeyBank, TD Bank, the Alliance for Positive Health, and Planned Parenthood. We are accepting applications for any fellow LGBTQ organizations or nonprofits who would like to table during the event; there are limited spaces available. No registration is required to attend the Expo.

PRIDE 5K & PRIDE PAWRADE: CELEBRATING WITH EVERY STEP AND WAG

In a fresh twist to our annual Pride 5K run/walk, we're excited to introduce the Pride Pawrade on May 5, 2024, in collaboration with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. This innovative partnership invites participants to bring their dressed-up dogs, merging fitness, fun, and furry friends into a single, joyous celebration. Register for the 5K below, and be on the lookout for more information about the doggy costume categories and times!

The Pride Center is dedicated to hosting a diverse array of events that cater to the unique needs of our community. These initiatives reflect our understanding of the mental health benefits derived from regular community gatherings. By spreading our events throughout the year, we aim to reach broader audiences, accommodate various schedules, and offer respite from the “busy-ness” of Pride month in June. This approach maintains momentum in our advocacy and support efforts, ensuring that the spirit of Pride is a constant presence in our lives and community.

NOT FLORIDA, NEW YORK

In a remarkable demonstration of advocacy and resilience, a local family has taken a stand against discriminatory practices and remarks within the Mohonasen School District, sparking crucial conversations on the protections and policies safeguarding LGBTQ+ students in educational institutions. This situation underscores the imperative need for comprehensive policies that effectively hold individuals accountable for discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and ensure a safe, inclusive environment for all students.

A STAND AGAINST DISCRIMINATION

The controversy began when a conservative school board member made harmful remarks during a meeting, likening the Genders and Sexualities Alliance (GSA) to a group that studies and promotes pedophilia. These remarks, and the subsequent actions taken by the board member, led to significant distress within the school's LGBTQ+ community, with one student, in particular, experiencing direct harm and a hostile school environment. The student's parent, Todd Lewis, has since been at the forefront of seeking justice and policy reform to protect students from such discriminatory conduct.

THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE

Todd and his family have embarked on a lengthy journey to hold the responsible parties accountable, utilizing various legal and educational channels. Despite facing considerable challenges, including the limitations of the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) in addressing the actions of unpaid Board of Education members, the family filed a Section 310 petition to the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This detailed petition outlines the incidents, the alleged willful neglect of duty by the board member, and the significant impact on the student and the wider LGBTQ+ community at Mohonasen. It would appear at this time that DASA does not cover the actions of the school board member, minimizing its scope and strength in protecting queer youth.

THE NEED FOR POLICY REFORM

This case highlights critical gaps in current policies, particularly the ambiguity surrounding DASA's applicability to unpaid school officials and the lack of timely response mechanisms to complaints. The protracted process and the legislative nuances not only prolonged the student's distress but also exposed the systemic inadequacies in protecting LGBTQ+ students from discrimination and harassment.

A CALL TO ACTION

As advocates for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity, it is our collective responsibility to rally for changes that ensure no student ever has to endure what Todd's child experienced. This case serves as a powerful reminder of the work that remains in achieving true equity and dignity for all students, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. It calls for a united front in advocating for legislative and policy changes that close the loopholes in existing protections and create a truly inclusive and safe educational environment for every student.

The Pride Center stands in solidarity with Todd and his family, and all those fighting against discrimination in schools. We commit to advocating for the necessary policy reforms and supporting families navigating similar challenges. Let this story be a catalyst for change, ensuring that every student can learn in an environment that celebrates diversity and champions inclusivity.

In the April edition of our newsletter, we are thrilled to share insights from a remarkable panel discussion on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) hosted by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society on Wednesday, March 27th. This event, significant in its scope and depth, brought together voices from across the spectrum to delve into the nuances of DEI, with a particular focus on the LGBTQ+ community's experiences and perspectives, proudly represented by the Pride Center of the Capital Region.

EMPOWERING LGBTQ+ VOICES IN THE WORKPLACE

One of the panel's focal points was the critical need for workplaces to not only accommodate but actively celebrate LGBTQ+ identities. It was articulated that the measure of a truly inclusive environment is where LGBTQ+ individuals feel empowered to be openly themselves. This authenticity is not just beneficial for the individuals but enriches the organizational culture, fostering a more creative, dynamic, and empathetic workplace.

ADDRESSING THE REALITIES OF DEI

The event underscored DEI as a dynamic and evolving field, particularly in response to current social movements and the urgent need for systemic change. Panelists from the Pride Center emphasized that DEI work is deeply personal and interconnected with the real-world experiences of marginalized communities. They shared stories and data illustrating the ongoing challenges and triumphs in the fight for equity and inclusion, emphasizing the theme, "my reality is different than yours." This mantra served as a powerful reminder of the unique journeys of individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in DEI efforts.

COMBATTING MICROAGGRESSIONS AND UNCONSCIOUS BIAS

A significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to identifying and addressing microaggressions and unconscious biases—subtle but insidious barriers to true inclusivity. The panelists shared personal experiences and strategies for challenging these issues, both within oneself and in broader organizational contexts. The conversation revealed a consensus on the need for ongoing education and active engagement to dismantle these barriers and ensure a safe space for all, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals.

ACTIONABLE STEPS TOWARDS INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE

The panel didn't just highlight problems; it offered solutions. It called for a commitment from both individuals and organizations to undertake tangible steps towards creating more inclusive environments. This includes educating oneself on LGBTQ+ issues, advocating for more inclusive policies, and practicing active allyship. The panelists encouraged attendees to reflect on how they can contribute to this vital work, emphasizing the role of every individual in driving change.

REFLECTING ON THE PANEL'S IMPACT

Hosted by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, the panel served as a beacon of hope and a call to action for the Capital Region's LGBTQ+ community and allies. It demonstrated the power of collective efforts in advancing DEI and highlighted the invaluable work of the Pride Center in championing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.

As we reflect on the insights and inspirations from this panel, we are reminded of the ongoing journey towards diversity, equity, and inclusion. It's a journey that requires us all to listen, learn, and act with compassion and conviction. Let's carry forward the momentum from this event and continue to work together for a world where everyone can proudly live their truth.
