Dear Friends,

Spring has truly sprung in the Capital Region, and with the flowers in bloom and the sun shining brighter, we are exhilarated to announce the commencement of our Pride season. This weekend marks the beginning of a series of enriching and festive events, starting with our TRANSition Expo on May 4th, followed by the much-anticipated Pride 5K and Parade on May 5th.

The TRANSition Expo is an exceptional opportunity to deepen our understanding and support of the transgender community. We invite you to join us at the Blake Annex, where you can connect with community partners who provide crucial services and support to transgender individuals. It's a chance to learn, engage, and celebrate the diversity of experiences within our community.

On Sunday, the festivities continue with our Pride 5K. This event is not just a race; it's a celebration of strength, resilience, and joy. We are excited to bring additional fun with free face painting, a food truck courtesy of Margarita City celebrating Cinco de Mayo, and a host of engaging activities for all ages. Then at 11:30am our 3rd annual Pride Paw-Rade will take place just before all awards are announced. It promises to be a day of energy, smiles, and community spirit.

Looking ahead, we are still accepting applications for vendors and parade marchers for our big event on June 9th. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your support and connect with the community. Additionally, we are calling on volunteers to join us in making these events memorable. We have a volunteer orientation scheduled for May 18th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Hannaford on Central Avenue. Your involvement is not just valuable; it is vital to the success of our Pride celebrations.

As we step into this vibrant season, let us come together to support, celebrate, and uplift one another. Every face in the crowd, every volunteer behind the scenes, and every story shared adds to the mosaic of our incredible community. Let's make this Pride season one to remember for its warmth, inclusivity, and the joy we create together.

With gratitude and excitement,

Nathaniel Gray

Join the Rainbow Runners Group Every Wednesday

We are excited to launch our new Rainbow Runners Group, thanks to the initiative of Brandon Doran at Mr. Bumble’s Cafe. Every Wednesday, community members are invited to lace up their sneakers for an evening of fitness and fellowship. Whether you’re a beginner or an avid runner, this group is for you.

Revamped Senior Programming

This month, we’re thrilled to reintroduce more opportunities for our senior community. Our Aging with Pride group, now meeting on the third Friday of every month from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Colonie Senior Services Center, offers a great chance for seniors to connect and share experiences in a supportive environment. Additionally, we're restarting Potluck Sundays at the First Presbyterian Church at State and Willett in Center Square on the first Sunday of each month, starting this May 5th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Join us after the Pride 5K and Paw-rade for some delicious food and wonderful company!

Important Update for Pride Parade and Festival

As our Pride Parade and Festival continue to grow—last year attracting as many as 35,000 attendees—we are collaborating closely with the city of Albany to ensure a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved. Please be aware that while the parade route will remain the same, other logistical elements may change to accommodate our growing numbers. All registered marchers and vendors will receive detailed updates as plans are finalized. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to make this year's event not only larger but safer and more enjoyable for all.

Volunteers Needed Across All Groups

The success of our groups and events depends heavily on the support of our volunteers. If you have the capacity to assist or are interested in starting a local group, we’d love to help you make a significant impact in the community. Contact us to find out how you can contribute to making the Capital Region a welcoming place for all. As a son of two Marines and a brother to an active-duty Marine, I shared my personal journey during the panel. Growing up in a military family, I was groomed for service. However, the enactment of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 1996 made me realize the impossibility of serving with integrity while having to conceal my authentic self. This realization spotlighted the broader issue of how our military structures, steeped in a culture that often promotes toxic masculinity, fail to protect and respect the dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals. In fact, the military has yet to do anything honoring the service of queer people, who have been serving (whether openly or not) since the military began.

Looking Forward

These conferences serve as a powerful reminder of the work that remains in dismantling barriers and ensuring that LGBTQ+ individuals can serve openly and safely in all capacities. They underscore the need for ongoing dialogue and reform to address the cultural structures that undermine unity and cohesion within our armed forces.

As we continue to advocate for these changes, we celebrate the courage of those who have served in silence and those who speak out to make the military a more inclusive environment. Our efforts honor their service and pave the way for future generations to serve authentically and without compromise.

If you are an LGBTQ+ veteran of the military and want to tell us more about your experience, or learn more about the Restoration of Honor act for anyone dishonorably discharged, please reach out to us at info@capitalpridecenter.org.

Diverse Voices, Shared Experiences

Julie Grey-Owens, Executive Director of Gender Equality New York, shared insights on challenging toxic masculinity and homophobia within traditionally male-dominated environments like the military and law enforcement. Her expertise highlighted the critical need for training and reform to create safer, more inclusive spaces.

Personal Reflections on Service and Identity

Last week, I had the honor of participating in two significant conferences organized by the Department of Veterans Services for the State of New York, focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Veteran Affairs. These events, held at the Fordham Law Library in New York City and the Albany Law School Auditorium, brought together veterans, advocates, and community leaders to address the pressing issues facing LGBTQ+ service members, veterans, and their families.

A Platform for Change

The conferences opened dialogues about the lingering effects of policies like "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which forced many, like one of our fellow panelists, a lesbian army veteran, to hide their true selves for the majority of her 28-year career. Her moving account detailed the personal and professional turmoil of attending social military functions without her partner, illustrating the profound impact of such exclusionary policies on individuals' lives, sense of belonging, and their mental health.
