October is LGBTQ+ History month. Our history is a unique one, because it isn't passed generation to generation in the same nuclear family, but rather, generation to generation in the broader community. Every queer community has elders who have experienced much; each has a growing class of excited teens ready to get to college and meet other people like themselves.

As we continue to petition schools in New York State to honor the LGBTQ+ community by requiring our history be taught, we must also share stories amongst ourselves, watch queer cinema, read Baldwin and Morrison, quote Audre Lorde and mourn Harvey Milk. Just because my mom didn't sit me on her knee and tell me about a legendary figure who was assassinated within his first year in office for being an openly gay man doesn't make it any less important as a guiding light for the queer man I seek to become.

We have heroes in those history books, and perhaps finding and uplifting those role models for yourself, and even more importantly for the kids, is a salve to reach for every time someone tries to make you feel less than because you happen to be lucky enough to be born in the LGBTQ+ family.

I think October needs to be LGBTQ+ history month for us all; please do yourself the favor to look up a queer historical figure, or listen to a great queer history podcast, and be reminded of the deep roots we have as revolutionaries in every age and place. Once you realize how long we've been here, how much we've already overcome, and how much we've contributed to the world, it becomes a lot harder to find anything but PRIDE in who you are and the common history we share.

Pride Center of the Capital Region

The Pride Center of the Capital Region held its annual Aging with Pride boat cruise on Saturday, September 24th! With over 250 attendees, the ever-amazing DJ Sean McLaughlin, and tabling by our community partners such as In Our Own Voices and AARP- the cruise went off without a hitch!

Sailing with the Captain JP Morgan cruise lines out of Troy, The Pride Center thanks their attentive and lively staff who were so helpful to us all Saturday evening. The Pride Center also thanks AARP and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Albany Chapter, for their gracious sponsorship, helping us continue to offer this night on the Hudson free of cost to those 55+, and only $25 to those 54 and below. Last but never least, thank you to each and everyone who attended, to Philly Pina for a stellar drag show, to DJ Sean who kept the cruise dancing, and to our community partners who joined us.

We can’t wait to set sail with you all next year!

THE AGING WITH PRIDE CRUISE WAS A BLAST!

Do you live in the North Country (Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, or St. Lawrence counties)? If so, we want to hear from you!

The Essex County Health Department is working with Johns Hopkins University researchers who are conducting a survey of LGBTQ+ folks in the North Country. Through the survey we hope to learn more about LGBTQ+ health and access to health care in the region.

The survey asks what county you live in but is otherwise anonymous. After completing the survey you can enter a drawing to win one of two $250 prizes.

SONIA SANDOVAL ~ DJ RVMBA

Starting two years ago, Sonia began DJing for Schenectady Pride as “DJ RVMBA”, until 2023 when Sonia took on the role of co-chair and coordinator for this Pride event in the Electric City. While she reflects that planning an event like this takes a lot of time and effort, Sonia took this role and ran with it. As an attendee of Schenectady Pride, we can attest to just how much this pride event has grown and how well coordinated it was! Sonia shares that Schenectady has a lack of LGBTQ+ spaces, but not a lack of an LGBTQ+ community. Something that Sonia is trying to change with her work in Schenectady Pride, spending this off-season prepping and perfecting the tasks needed to host a successful Pride event.

From Learning Designer to DJ to master composter and gardener (yep, Sonia is one of those too) we know we are only seeing the beginning of Sandoval’s presence not only in diversifying our community but as a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ folks and their allies. Sonia has a value of sharing, stating often during our chat about wanting others to have enough and that we are able if we share our resources. This sharing mentality coupled with Sonia’s laidback personality and passion for advocacy is just what Schenectady needs to shake things up a bit.

Sonia Sandoval is a person with many skills. You may know her as “DJ RVMBA”, or you may know her from her position at Union College, her alma mater, where Sonia is a Learning Designer by day. No matter how you know her, Sonia is a staple in the LGBTQ+ community in Schenectady and is striving to make this city more affirming and safe for her community.

Sonia’s love for music began at an early age, 15 to be exact, with memories of her father being the family member who brought the large speakers to family gatherings, lighting the rooms up with music and dance. Sonia hails from New York City and her DJing began with friends and family, gatherings that were word of mouth and not yet done under the name of “DJ RVMBA.”

When Sonia relocated to Schenectady for her college years at Union, she realized the DJ scene here was not as diverse as she was hearing or seeing in the city. Sonia began DJing in college, and quickly brought her diverse and more inclusive style of music and beats that the Capital Region hadn’t seen before. This lit the way for “DJ RVMBA.”

Sonia’s last words were a quote she shared: “The wisest men plant seeds for trees they’ll never sit under.” This statement speaks to the bricks Sonia is laying in her community now for LGBTQ+ folks, as well as those who are BIPOC and/or Latinx, to have a solid foundation to stand on in their future.
