It's hard to imagine that I'm writing this as someone who loves summer, but we are already in back-to-school season, with fall upon us shortly thereafter. The Pride Center is incredibly proud of the work we've been able to do over the years, not just with youth and young adults, but also directly within schools. We're excited to highlight in this newsletter some of the work we've been doing with two community partners that is helping us create space for LGBTQ+ youth in Rensselaer County—within their schools, their communities, and through training and support for teachers and mental health counselors.

As we head into the back-to-school season, this time can be both exciting and daunting. For many, it's the end of a beloved summer and the start of a new chapter. But for LGBTQ+ kids, going back to school can be terrifying. The environments they return to may pose risks from peers, and research shows that harm can also come from school staff. Add to that the unknowns of new teachers, classrooms, and bathrooms, and it's clear that the school experience is fraught with challenges.

New York has made significant strides with laws like GENDA and DASA, but it's not enough if the environments our kids return to don't reflect the promise of those laws. At the Pride Center, we believe in one simple truth when it comes to working with LGBTQ+ kids: they are born everywhere, every day, without a choice in the matter. It is our choice, however, to create environments that acknowledge that truth. We want queer kids to have the birthright to stay in their communities, rather than feeling they have to leave to find safety and acceptance elsewhere.

So, as we move into this school season, be proud. Be proud if you're part of the LGBTQ+ community. Be proud as you walk into or start your own GSA. Be proud as a queer teacher creating space for queer kids to see role models. Be proud as an ally helping to create safe spaces. Be proud as a parent who has cultivated an environment where your child can share their truth. Walk into this school year with pride.

2024 AGING WITH PRIDE CRUISE PICS

We are thrilled to report that over 250 LGBTQ+ folks of all ages—but especially those 55 and over—joined us on the Aging with Pride Cruise on the Captain JP out of Troy. This annual event continues to grow, and we are incredibly thankful to our sponsors, whom we will list below, for making this event possible.

We had an amazing lineup of entertainment with DJ Cyrus and drag talent Avi Babs Monster and London J Precise keeping the crowd engaged and happy. The feedback from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive. We will feature some of the best photos from the event below, and we look forward to seeing you all next year at this fantastic event.

In the meantime, please join us at either of our monthly Aging with Pride events: the Aging with Pride Potluck on the first Sunday of each month at the First Presbyterian Church on Willett Street, and the Aging with Pride Meetup at the Colonie Senior Services Center on the third Friday of every month, from 10 AM to 12 PM, with a free lunch from 12 to 1 PM.

Renssalaer LGBTQ+ Youth Group

This month, we're shining a spotlight on the program we’re running at the Rensselaer and Lansingburgh schools, with support from Project AWARE and Capital District Connect. Both have received five-year federal grants to reduce suicidality and mental health disparities in target populations across the Capital Region. Through these partnerships, we've provided dozens of hours of training, technical assistance, and in-person groups in Rensselaer County—the first LGBTQ+ groups available for kids in this area.

Our work doesn’t stop there. Over the coming years, we will continue partnering with these schools to bring training on LGBTQ+ experiences and mental health disparities, with a focus on improving environments to prevent issues like system involvement and substance abuse. We are using materials created by the Family Acceptance Project, which helps identify affirming and rejecting behaviors towards LGBTQ+ children. Their research shows that rejecting behaviors increase risks like depression, anxiety, suicidality, and even long-term PTSD. These are very real dangers, even in our own Capital District, where some school board members openly express biases against LGBTQ+ existence.

We are committed to making schools safe and supportive spaces for all children. Recently, we held an all-day in-service training for teachers, covering topics like empathy building for LGBTQ+ experiences, knowledge sharing, and tangible allyship strategies. One key discussion centered on whether supporting LGBTQ+ rights publicly is a political stance. The very notion that acknowledging our existence is political—and somehow equated with extremist messaging—needs to be challenged.

Our work continues with plans to expand to five schools over this next school year. We welcome any school districts across the four counties of the Capital Region to reach out to our Executive Director, Nathaniel Gray, at ngray@capitalpridecenter.org to learn more about how they can get involved. We also extend our thanks to the Boys and Girls Clubs of both Rensselaer and Lansingburgh for hosting these groups, helping to build what will become a thriving youth group for queer kids in Rensselaer for years to come.
